age-appropriate & evidence-based programming

KYH is a school-based program designed for elementary-aged children. The services provided include workshops for both parents and students, and follow up workshops. Our parents’ workshop supports students’ learning, so that they are able to carry out the behaviors taught in a supportive environment. The students’ workshop is approximately 60 minutes in length and is tailored to the various grades served. There is an initial presentation given by youth health educators, which will overview age-appropriate health and fitness concepts, along with two follow-up visits to assess behavioral changes. Additionally, Youth Health Educators will check-in with students quarterly to reinforce concepts.

These workshops provide age-appropriate, evidence-based nutritional and fitness best practices based on national and international standards. Moreover, there are yearlong challenges to motivate students to adopt key behavior change practices introduced. This year’s challenge involves students tracking their water intake through water bottles provided by the project. Students will be encouraged to refill their bottles to ensure they are drinking a sufficient quantity of water. Additionally, there will be pre- and post-tests to ascertain knowledge gained across all domains of instruction.
